I have been in Japan for about 8 years. I had not studied any foreign language in my life, including Japanese, before I actually arrived in Tokyo. At first, I learned some basic survival Japanese from friends. After living in Tokyo for 3 years, I knew I needed to pick up the pace when someone asked me "Doko ni sunde imasuka" (where do you live). I had no idea what they said and I realized how little Japanese I really knew. I have been studying with Machida-sensei for about three years. I feel like every lesson is customized to my needs and each lesson builds on the previous one. I highly recommend AZ Japan to anybody who is serious about enjoying life in Japan. I got never bored or frustrated, because the teacher understood how to motivate and offered exactly the methods I needed for going ahead with the language. It has always been sort of tailorcut lessons, very well structured and interesting.

Language is the foundation for exchanging information among humans. Communication is necessary in order to understand other cultures, their customs, and to foster respect and to develop acceptance.
I have my "sensei" to thank for opening the door to this fantastic, sometimes mysterious, and impressive new world, with her many explanations about Japanese culture.
Scheduling is very flexible and during the lessons we have a lot of fun. Because of this friendly and warmhearted atmosphere, learning Japanese has become so enjoyable. I can’t wait to have my next one-on-one lesson. Now, after 3 months, I can survive in Japan. Even though my language skills are still not perfect, it’s much easier to communicate with the Japanese.

My name is Martyn Williams and I have been working as a journalist in Japan for the last nine years. Before coming to Japan I knew no Japanese and survived for the first five years by studying myself and picking up the language from friends and through television. This however only got me so far and I realized that I needed to formal study regime in order to progress further and that a lesson would be perfect to get my into studying and also help with when I have problems. I have been studying with AZ Japanese and Machida-sensei for around two years. She has been a great help in explaining Japanese grammar and helping me improve my general speaking ability. By studying with her, I have been following a consistent and logical study path that helped me towards passing level 3 of the Japanese proficiency exam and is helping towards level 2.
